WiFi 7: a better upgrade starts with better questions
New wireless technology creates opportunities. The value for your business depends on your devices, your building and the network behind it.
What has changed?
WiFi 7 introduces capabilities including multi-link operation and wider channels of up to 320 MHz in the 6 GHz band. These can improve throughput, responsiveness and reliability in suitable conditions. The features available in practice depend on the access point, client device, software and permitted spectrum. A WiFi 7 label alone does not tell you what a particular deployment will deliver.
Start with the devices you actually use
Which laptops, phones and specialist devices will use the network? When will they be replaced? A refresh should account for today’s clients as well as tomorrow’s. New access points cannot give every older device the capabilities of a newer radio. A mixed estate needs a design that supports the business throughout the transition.
Look beyond the access point
Review the switching, power budget, uplinks and cabling alongside the wireless equipment. Check the requirements of the models under consideration rather than assuming the existing infrastructure will support every feature. There is little value in spending on wireless capability that the rest of the connection cannot use.
The widest channel is a choice, not a target
Headline bandwidth is only one design consideration. The local radio environment, available spectrum, number of access points and application requirements also matter. A well-judged channel plan aims for a consistent service across the site. It does not simply select the largest number in the settings menu.
Make the upgrade earn its place
A new site, an approaching support deadline, growing device numbers or a substantial change in usage can create a sensible opportunity to review the network. Start by identifying the outcome you need. Then compare a targeted improvement with a wider refresh, including installation, support and the useful life of the equipment.
Our view
WiFi Partners is interested in technology that solves a real requirement. We can help assess the existing network, develop a design and plan deployment around the way the site operates. The right recommendation might be a new generation of equipment, a phased upgrade or better use of what is already there.
